Review:
Despite being a controversial method of subsistence, whaling was one of the main ways that the communities of Azores prospered from the 19th Century till the 1980s.
So important was whaling to the way of life on the islands that a museum was founded in 1988 to portray and depict the whaling history of Azores. The Museu dos Baleeiros is located in an old whaling boat warehouse and displays hundreds of artifacts from the region’s whaling days.
Visitors can see old boats, photographs of the whalers, and the items used to catch whales. There is also a beautiful collection of engravings and carvings made from the teeth and bones of whales, which is actually a popular art form known as scrimshaw.
