Review & Frequenly Asked Questions:

Home to one of the largest Ice Caves in the US mid-West, Decorah Ice Cave State Park is an interesting place to visit on a day trip. The preserve covers about 3 acres and is open to the public on a “at your own risk” basis. The cave is quite unusual in that it is above ground and was never caused by glacier movement. In fact, it is a curious combination of natural factors which cause the cave to remain freezing cold all year round. Unfortunately, the limestone surroundings are not very stable and a rock-fall inside the cave has considerably restricted the interior space you can explore. You will need to take a short hike to reach the cave and you are advised to bring a torch and a warm jacket – even in July.
