If you’re dreaming of a peaceful New England escape that’s full of charm, creativity, and coastal calm, I can’t recommend Old Lyme enough. I’ve wandered its art galleries, walked its beaches, and spent quiet afternoons exploring colonial homes—it’s the kind of place that feeds your soul. Whether you’re looking to recharge in nature or soak in a little history and inspiration, you’ll find yourself falling for Old Lyme just like I did.
Best Time to Visit
I always suggest visiting between May and October. You’ll get the best of everything—sunny beach days, strolls through local galleries, and warm evenings with live music and art festivals. I’ve gone hiking through nearby preserves in fall too, and the foliage makes the scenery even more magical. It’s the kind of trip where you can slow down and really savor your surroundings.
How to Get There
- Driving in? I’ve taken I-95 down from Boston and up from NYC—both routes are easy, and the scenery gets especially pretty once you’re near the coast. You’ll be in Old Lyme in about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on where you're coming from.
- Taking the train? I’ve used Amtrak to Old Saybrook Station, which is only about 15 minutes from Old Lyme. From there, you can grab a taxi or rideshare—it’s smooth and simple, especially if you’re coming from New York or Boston without a car.
- Flying in? I’ve flown into Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) when I wanted a short drive—just 45 minutes away. Bradley International (BDL) is another great option, about an hour north, with more flight choices.
Where to Stay
- Old Lyme Inn – I’ve stayed here for a cozy weekend and loved every second. You’ll get historic charm, comfy rooms, and live jazz in the evening—it’s like stepping into a slower, more elegant era.
- Bee and Thistle Inn – This bed and breakfast is a dream. I loved sitting in the gardens with a book and watching the river flow nearby. If you’re after peace and timeless beauty, you’ll adore this place.
- Saybrook Point Resort & Marina – I booked a night here to treat myself, and it delivered. Spa time, fine dining, and those waterfront views? You’ll feel fully pampered. It’s just a few minutes away in Old Saybrook and makes a perfect upgrade if you want a luxe twist to your trip.
