The Swan River is a 95-mile stretch of water which drains the isolated Swan Valley in western Montana. For adventure lovers the most interesting part of the river lies between Flathead Lake and Bigfork Dam, where the river drops a dramatic 30m over the course of a mile. This section is known as the “Wild Mile” and offers adrenalin junkies a truly exhilarating stretch of river for whitewater rafting, paddling and kayaking. This section hosts the annual Bigfork Whitewater Festival each May, when daredevils come from near and far to pit their skills against the Class IV and V+ rapids. The section of the river above Bigfork Dam is a lot more placid and is known to offer excellent trout fishing.
