Tucked up right against the Canadian border in northwest Montana, Glacier National Park offers more than 1,500 square miles of pristine wilderness dotted with sparkling lakes and soaring mountains. There are dozens of fantastic day hikes, but if you want to take a longer trip, backcountry camping is permitted in most places as long as you get a permit. The scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road bisects the entire park and is the best way to access most trailheads, but the most of the road is closed during the winter and whenever the weather makes it unsafe to drive.
