Sky Top Orchard, North Carolina began as a commercial apple grower for the local supermarkets in the late 1960s but something didn’t feel right about picking apples before they’re ready. Now the family operation serves the general public first-hand by opening u-pick tours when the apples are at the peak of their perfection. The 100-acre orchard is perched atop Mt McAlpine in the South Mountains, an ancient isolated remnant of the Appalachians. Sky Top Orchard charges no admission fee to use the picnic areas or to visit the playground, animal farm, or explore the bamboo forest. Apple pickers, however, must pre-pay for u-pick tours with an attendant to receive a collecting basket.
