The Santa Barbara Zoo is home to over 500 animals representing close to 150 species. Most popular residents include the Brazilian capybara, African lions, Asian otters, Asian elephant, bald eagles, and gorillas. Mammals, birds, reptiles and insects are exhibited in open and naturalistic areas and the zoo is a participant in the worldwide Species Survival Plan, aimed at safeguarding against distinction. The zoo is a participant in the California Condor Recovery Program. Tour the grounds aboard the zoo train, feed the giraffes, observe food preparation at the animal kitchen, and pet or feed domestic animals at the barnyard.
