Port Meadow is a gorgeous open common space located along the banks of the River Thames, just northwest of Oxford's city center. The beautiful meadow was historically used as grazing land for cattle and horses and is reported to have not been ploughed for at least four millennia. Today, it is known as Oxford's oldest monument, stretching between Jericho and Wolvercote, and is most noted as the site where Lewis Carroll famously began to improvise the story that would become Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Well-preserved archaeological remains are showcased throughout the meadow, including artifacts from Bronze and Iron Age settlements. Beautiful patches of wildflowers line walking areas, including buttercups, yarrow, and white clovers. Across the river, Bossoms Boatyard offers a public-use marina.
