Ogunquit is a trendy coastal tourist town, located within the Portland, Maine metropolitan statistical area. The town's name is a reference to the Abenaki indigenous word for "beautiful place by the sea," originally settled in 1641 as part of the nearby city of Wells.

Today, it has become a popular retirement village and LGBT tourist destination in New England. Views of the Atlantic Ocean are offered from Ogunquit Beach, while a 1.25-mile cliff walk at Marginal Way connects the beachfront to the town's downtown shopping and dining district. Ogunquit cultural attractions include the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, focusing on the works of Maine artists, and the Ogunquit Playhouse, which stages musical performances each summer.
