Established in 1986, the park is named after the dry and mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch Mountains known as the Great Basin, and features the Lehman Caves, which are found at the base of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, and the Wheeler Peak Glacier. The Great Basin National Park lies next to the Highland Ridge Wilderness, and these two protected areas make up 227.8-square-mile contiguous wildlife habitat and protection.
