In 1856 Joshua Hendy established the Hendy Machine Works in San Francisco. The company went on to produce all kinds of iron goods and was one of the largest iron manufacturers in the city. After the catastrophic earthquake and fire of 1906, the company was moved to its present location in Sunnyvale. Today the building has been converted into a museum which showcases the large-scale iron products which were manufactured there, including a large number of ship engines, rocket and torpedo launchers and other essential items used during WWII. Guided tours are available by appointment (only US citizens over the age of 10 years may visit).
