History of Airport Code FRA
Frankfurt Airport, airport code FRA, has a very long and storied history. It opened up as an airport in 1936, but the history of aviation in the city of Frankfurt goes back even further, with the world's first airline, Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft (DELAG), actually being founded in the city in 1909 and building the first airport in the city shortly afterwards. This airport was used in World War I but the big surge in air traffic in the late 1920s meant that the airport was too small to cope with popular demand.

The Allied forces actually bombed the airport and destroyed several buildings and runways.
When the war ended, Frankfurt Airport was rebuilt and expanded to meet the demands of modern passenger jets. A new, large terminal known as the Central Terminal was constructed in the 1960s and opened up in 1972, with another terminal being built in the 1990s.
