Governors Island, a tiny 172-acre spot of land not even 800 yards from Manhattan’s New York Harbor, has seen many different uses and many different residents. It started as a Native American fishing camp, and during Civil War it became a prison for Confederate prisoners and later was the US Coast Guard Headquarters. The new “glamping” retreat attracts some very different guests. On its grassy hills, with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline, you will find luxury tents. It's a seasonal retreat and a quick staycation destination for New Yorkers that is easily accessible by a 5-minute ferry. The tents have all the amenities of a luxury hotel, such as hot showers, coffeemakers, king-sized beds, and chandeliers. The retreat has a large indoor-outdoor “lodge tent”, which can be used for weddings and other festivities.
