Wharton State Forest is not your typical outdoor recreational area. Within the forest, visitors will be dazzled by Batsto Village – an 18th century historic village – with 33 preserved structures including a general store, sawmill, gristmill, post office, and a blacksmith shop that provides live demonstrations.

There are also the Batsto Mansion and the homes of former village workers here. Even deeper into the forest is Harrisville Village, an abandoned mill town turned ghost town; it too is open for tours. The 1826 Greek Revival style Atison Mansion is also located in the forest and tours are available. Additionally, Wharton has everything you would expect from a recreational state forest.
