Located on St. Simons Island, the Fort Frederica National Monument honors the preserved remains of the 18th century fortifications that were built to protect the southern boundary of the British colony of Georgia from the Spaniards. Constructed between 1736 and 1748 by James Oglethorpe, about 630 British troops were stationed at the fort, while the town surrounding the fort grew to over 500 residents.

Named after Frederick, the Prince of Wales and son of King George II, Fort Frederica is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open for the public to explore. Fort Frederica National Monument offers a variety of public programs, including a 23-minute park film, a museum with exhibits, displays, self-guided explorations, ranger-guided tours, and ranger-led programs.
