I touched down at Orlando Sanford International Airport just after noon, and within minutes I was on my way. No crowds, no hassle. Just palm trees, blue skies, and the promise of a weekend filled with charm. I’d heard whispers about Sanford’s historic district and lakefront beauty, but nothing quite prepared me for how instantly it felt like home.
Where to Stay
- Higgins House Bed & Breakfast: I stayed here for a few nights, and it was everything I hoped for—Victorian charm, homemade breakfasts, and a porch that practically begged me to slow down with a cup of coffee.
- Park Place Inn and Cottages: A great boutique option, especially if you’re traveling solo or as a couple. It’s quiet, comfy, and just a short walk from downtown—which I loved for spontaneous strolls and dinner plans.
- Monroe’s On The Lake Hotel & Banquet Hall: If you want a lakeside view and a pool, this spot gives you both. I didn’t stay here personally, but I scoped it out for next time—it’s in a great location.
- Comfort Inn & Suites Orlando North: This one’s modern, reliable, and great if you want hotel amenities while staying close to the historic district.
- Local vacation rentals: I spotted some cozy waterfront homes and historic district options—perfect if you want space, a kitchen, and a homey feel during your stay.
Best Time to Visit
I visited in March, and honestly, the weather was ideal—sunny, breezy, and perfect for wandering downtown or getting out on the water. If you're planning a trip, I’d recommend coming between October and April. You’ll get cooler temps, fewer bugs, and the bonus of seasonal festivals or blooming gardens, depending on when you go. I’ve seen both spring blooms and twinkling holiday lights here—and each has its own kind of magic.
By the time I packed up and headed back to the airport, I wasn’t ready to leave—and for me, that’s how I know a place truly got under my skin. Sanford isn’t flashy or famous, but that’s exactly why I love it. It invites you to slow down, enjoy the moment, and maybe come back again—next time with a few friends in tow.
How to Get There
- By Car: Sanford is easy to reach via I-4 and State Road 417—about 25 miles north of Orlando. I found the drive quick and scenic, especially if you're coming from the Orlando area.
- By Air: I flew into Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), which is just a few minutes from town. Super convenient if you want to skip the Orlando traffic.
- By Train: Want to bring your own car on a Florida road trip? Amtrak’s Auto Train arrives right in Sanford—it's a unique way to travel and a great option if you’re coming from the Northeast.
