If you want small-town charm with a touch of quirky fun, I’d say head straight to Oviedo, Florida. I’ve met the town’s famous chickens myself—they just roam freely like they own the place, and you’ll probably end up smiling every time you see one. You can stroll the historic streets, explore lush trails, and still be just minutes away from Orlando. If you’re anything like me, you’ll love how it mixes that Old Florida feeling with a splash of modern-day adventure. It’s ideal whether you’re traveling with kids, following your taste buds, or just out to discover something new.

Best Time to Visit

From my own visits, I’d say the best time to explore Oviedo is between October and April. That’s when the weather’s cooler, making your time outside much more enjoyable. Spring always surprises me with gorgeous blooms, and if you come in fall or winter, you’ll catch local markets and festivals—with fewer crowds than you’d find in nearby Orlando. It’s a win-win.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in using FL-417 or FL-434, depending on where I’m coming from. You’ll find that Oviedo’s northeast of Orlando and really easy to reach—no stressful traffic, just smooth roads and scenic detours if you want them.
  • By Air: When I fly in, I use Orlando International Airport (MCO). It’s only about a 30 to 40-minute drive to Oviedo, and if you rent a car, you’re free to explore the whole area at your own pace.
  • By Bus: I’ve tried the Lynx public transit before, but it’s pretty limited in this part of town. If you ask me, renting a car gives you the flexibility to really see and enjoy everything Oviedo has to offer.

Where to Stay

  • Residence Inn by Marriott Orlando Lake Nona – If you’re staying a little longer, this place has been a great pick for me. You’ll have a spacious suite and a full kitchen, which is especially nice if you’re traveling with family or just like to prep your own meals.
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando East – UCF Area – I’ve stayed here when visiting the university, and I think you’ll find it super convenient for campus events or game days. Plus, those warm DoubleTree cookies at check-in? Always a bonus.
  • Local vacation rentals – Personally, I love finding a cozy Airbnb or guest home when I want a quieter, more homey stay. You’ll find some really charming spots around Oviedo that are perfect for couples or families looking to relax and unwind.
