Route 66, also known as the Mother Road, is one of America's great iconic highways, originally constructed in the early 20th century prior to the implementation of the Interstate Highway System. Though most of the road's route has been converted into other highways today, Oklahoma is home to more preserved drivable patches of the highway than any other state, making it a great destination for roadside Americana enthusiasts. Over 400 miles of the road still stretches throughout the state today, home to iconic attractions like Catoosa's Blue Whale, which was constructed as a roadside swimming hole in the 1970s, and Hydro's Lucille's Service Station, one of only two gas stations of its type still operating in the state today. Route 66-themed museums abound, including Clinton's Route 66 Museum, Chandler's Route 66 Interpretive Center, and the National Route 66 and Transportation Museum in Elk City.
