Established in 1997 and measuring approximately 1,060 acres in size, the Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge is located around five miles southwest from Florence and was created to preserve the biological integrity of Collier Cave and Key Cave. In particular, Key Cave is a designated critical habitat for the Alabama cave fish, an endangered species. Both Collier Cave and Key Cave are located within a limestone karst area featuring underground cave systems and many sinkholes. Visitors should note that there aren’t any visitor services, such as water fountains or restrooms, in the Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge.
