Established in 1852, Historic Elmwood Cemetery is the oldest active cemetery in the city and one of the first examples of a garden cemetery in the South. It has a park-like setting with monuments, old trees, and scenic vistas. Originally consisting of 40 acres, it was expanded to 80 acres after the American Civil War.

Some of the mausoleums, monuments, and statues are decorated with representations of angels, flowers, and other plants, a reminder of the Victorian era’s view of death. Many veterans are buried here from the American Revolutionary War up to the Vietnam War.
