You can find Rhyolite Ghost Town 35 miles from the Furnace Creek Visitor’s Center just outside the Death Valley National Park in Nevada. The town was once quite extensive and owes its existence to the discovery of rich gold-bearing ore back in 1904. For a brief six to seven years, (until the mine was depleted), the town thrived, and prospectors flocked to the area from near and far.
Today, you can take a stroll around the town’s surviving buildings to get a idea of how the early miners and their families lived – the town boasted a three-storey bank building (some of which is still standing), a stock-exchange, two large schools, forty-five saloons, an opera house, and two railway depots.
