The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, is an iconic national monument that is recognized around the world.
The memorial was dedicated to all Marine Corps personnel who have lost their lives defending the United States since 1775.
Designed by sculptor Felix de Weldon and architect Horace W. Peaslee, the memorial was inspired by a photograph combat photographer Joe Rosenthal took of six marines raising a flag on top of Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Visitors now flock to Arlington Ridge Park where the memorial is located to pay respects to fallen marines and view that captured moment of our country’s history.
