Once a site of much local trade and travel, the Wethersfield Cove is a sheltered cove with deep water access to the Connecticut River upriver from Essex and is a prime recreational, boating and fishing resource for the region. Located 40 miles from Long Island Sound and sitting 10 feet above sea level, the cove has a rich history from its days of trade, but today is a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The Wethersfield Cove features several historical private homes, including the Solomon Welles House, and the Folly Brook Natural Preserve, and a marina with a boat launch ramp, boater moorings, a tender dock, and seven slips available to transient boaters.
