Looking for colonial charm, riverfront scenery, and walkable historic streets? I felt all that and more the moment I arrived in Wethersfield. Just a few minutes south of Hartford, this little town swept me back in time with its 18th-century homes, cobblestone sidewalks, and peaceful vibe. Whether you’re strolling through the historic district, paddling the river, or relaxing at a cozy café, I think you’ll find Wethersfield is exactly the kind of New England retreat you didn’t know you needed.
Best Time to Visit
Personally, I love visiting from late spring through fall. That’s when the gardens are blooming, events are popping up, and the weather is just right for walking tours and riverfront outings. I once came in October, and let me tell you—those fall colors are something else. Crisp air, golden leaves, and quiet streets? It’s the kind of cozy you dream about all year.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in off I-91—it’s just 10 minutes south of downtown Hartford. From either Boston or New York, you’re looking at about a 2-hour ride. Totally doable for a weekend getaway.
- By Air: I’ve flown into Bradley International Airport (BDL) a few times—it’s about 30 minutes away and has plenty of direct flights. Once you land, it’s a smooth drive into town.
- By Train: If you prefer to sit back and ride, Hartford’s Union Station is only about 15 minutes from Wethersfield. I’ve taken Amtrak there before, and it’s an easy hop to town by car or rideshare.
Where to Stay
- Silas W. Robbins House – I stayed here once and it felt like stepping into a Victorian dream. The rooms are elegant, the breakfasts are fantastic, and you’re right in the heart of Old Wethersfield. Perfect if you’re looking to treat yourself.
- Chester Bulkley House B&B – This one’s a gem if you love staying somewhere full of character. I enjoyed the antique touches and being able to walk straight to Main Street. It’s cozy, historic, and full of charm.
- Hilton Garden Inn Hartford South/Glastonbury – If you’re looking for a more modern stay with easy highway access, this spot just across the river works great. I’ve stayed here when I needed something simple and comfortable—it’s reliable and close to everything.
