If you’re dreaming of hot springs, mountain views, and a quiet Colorado escape, I can’t recommend Nathrop enough. Tucked between Salida and Buena Vista in the Arkansas River Valley, this little town stole my heart with its natural beauty and peaceful pace. I’ve soaked in geothermal pools with snow falling around me, hiked wildflower-filled trails in the summer, and used Nathrop as my base for some of my favorite Rocky Mountain adventures. Whether you want to relax, explore, or just take a deep breath of fresh mountain air, you’ll find it here.

Best Time to Visit

Personally, I love Nathrop in late spring through early fall (May–October), especially for hiking and rafting. The trails are gorgeous, the river is lively, and the hot springs feel amazing after a day outdoors. But I’ve also visited in winter, and December through March has its own kind of magic—snow-covered mountains, quiet mornings, and steaming hot pools under a starry sky. If you can time your trip for peak fall colors, you’re in for a real treat—the golden aspens are unforgettable.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in—Nathrop is right on US-285, perfectly placed between Buena Vista and Salida (just 15 minutes in either direction). From Denver or Colorado Springs, it’s about 2.5 hours and a beautiful drive through the mountains.
  • By Air: You’ll want to fly into Denver International (DIA) or Colorado Springs (COS). I’ve done both, and the drive from either airport is scenic and relaxing—just make sure you’ve got a good playlist.
  • Note: There’s no public transit out here, so I always rent a car. You’ll need it to explore nearby trails, lakes, and mountain towns at your own pace.

Where to Stay

  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort – I’ve stayed here more than once, and it’s worth it for the hot springs alone. Add mountain views, spa treatments, and comfy rooms, and you’ve got a full-on retreat.
  • Creekside Chalets – I spent a cozy winter weekend in one of these cabins and didn’t want to leave. They’ve got fireplaces, private decks, and easy access to Monarch Mountain if you’re into skiing or snowboarding.
  • Vacation Rentals – If you’re traveling with a group or staying longer, I’d check out the local cabins and riverfront homes. I’ve found some great ones with hot tubs, wood stoves, and views that make mornings unforgettable.
