Need a high-desert escape with sweeping views and off-the-beaten-path magic? Head to Alamosa! Tucked away in Colorado’s beautiful San Luis Valley, Alamosa is your basecamp for visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park—and so much more. Whether you're climbing the tallest dunes in North America, soaking in a hot spring under the stars, or hopping on a vintage train, Alamosa has that chill, small-town vibe with big outdoor adventure. I always find it peaceful, quirky, and unforgettable—especially when the Milky Way lights up the sky.
Best Time to Visit
I recommend planning your trip between May and October. That’s when the weather is ideal for exploring the dunes barefoot (yes, they get toasty in the sun!), hiking mountain trails, or spotting elk and sandhill cranes in the wetlands. If you can, go in late September or early October—fall colors in the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains are seriously gorgeous, and you’ll avoid summer crowds.
How to Get There
- By Car: Alamosa is easy to reach—just hop on U.S. Route 160 or U.S. 285. It’s about a 3.5-hour drive from Denver and just 2 hours from Pueblo. The drive is beautiful, especially if you’re coming through the mountain passes.
- By Air: There’s a small regional airport right in town—San Luis Valley Regional Airport (ALS)—with daily flights to Denver. It’s super convenient if you don’t want to drive the whole way.
- By Train: No direct Amtrak service here, but if you’re into trains, check out the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. They run seasonal excursions through the mountains, and it’s such a cool way to see the landscape (great for kids or train buffs!).
Where to Stay
- The Sunset Inn – A no-frills, comfy place with friendly service. It’s close to everything in town and just a quick drive to the dunes. Great if you’re on a budget and want a local feel.
- Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – If you’re traveling with family or want a few more perks, this is a solid option. Free breakfast, an indoor pool, and clean, modern rooms—it checks all the boxes.
- Dunes Inn – A classic local motel that’s super convenient if your main goal is visiting the national park. It’s simple but has everything you need, plus it’s got that laid-back Colorado charm.
