When I needed a tropical island getaway without the passport hassle, I headed to St. Croix—and honestly, you should too. It’s the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and gave me everything I was craving: white-sand beaches, a laid-back Caribbean vibe, vibrant culture, and fascinating history. You’ll love the convenience of traveling without a passport and the beauty of coral reefs, colonial towns, and rum distilleries—all wrapped into one dreamy destination.
St. Croix, USVI Highlights:
- If you’re into underwater adventure like I am, dive the Frederiksted Pier or Cane Bay Wall – I saw sea turtles, neon fish, and coral fans up close—some of the best shore diving I’ve ever done.
- Love history? You have to visit the Christiansted National Historic Site – Walking past 18th-century Danish buildings and sugar mill ruins made me feel like I’d stepped back in time. You’ll definitely want your camera for this one.
- Shopping more your style? I wandered through art galleries and island boutiques in both Christiansted and Frederiksted—picked up handmade jewelry and locally made rum that made the perfect souvenirs. You’ll love the duty-free prices, too.
- Looking for a romantic moment? Catch the sunset at Rainbow Beach – I grabbed a cocktail, kicked off my sandals, and watched the sky turn orange and pink over the Caribbean. Trust me—you’ll want to linger here a while.
- Have kids or just curious? I toured the Cruzan Rum Distillery and loved learning about the island’s iconic spirit (bonus: the tasting at the end!). You can pair it with a beach stop for a fun and easy afternoon.
Best Time to Visit St. Croix, USVI
I recommend going between December and May—the weather is sunny, dry, and breezy. It’s peak season, but worth it. If you’re flexible and don’t mind the possibility of rain, summer and early fall mean lower prices and fewer crowds. Just keep in mind that’s also hurricane season, so I always keep an eye on the forecast.
How to Get to St. Croix, USVI
- By Air: I flew into Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX), which has direct flights from Miami and Charlotte. You can also connect through San Juan, which worked well for me.
- By Sea: While ferries sometimes connect St. Croix with the other USVI islands, I found inter-island flights more reliable and quicker.
- Best part? As a U.S. citizen, I didn’t need a passport to travel here—just a photo ID. It made everything super easy.
Where to Stay in St. Croix, USVI
- I stayed at The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort – Think historic charm, private beaches, ocean-view breakfasts, and even a golf course. You’ll feel spoiled in the best way.
- Prefer something smaller and right on the sand? Sand Castle on the Beach in Frederiksted was perfect—LGBTQ+ friendly, super laid-back, and just steps from the water. Great vibes all around.
- If you want to be downtown with nightlife and a view, check out Caravelle Hotel & Casino – I loved walking the boardwalk in Christiansted after dinner and listening to live music nearby.
