Fort Duvernette was built in the 1790’s to protect the colonial town of Calliaqua, where trading ships used to load sugar bound for the UK market. The fort was built on a rocky outcrop which can only be reached by boat. You will need to be fit and energetic to reach the fort at the top of the little island – visitors need to climb around 240 steps which have been carved into the rock. Once you reach the top you can admire 2 decks on which the original batteries of cannons still stand. You will be rewarded for your efforts by sweeping 360 degree views of the southern shoreline.
