The Lost Horse Mine was once the best yielding gold and silver mine in what we now know as Joshua Tree National Park. At the height of the gold rush there were around 300 mines in the area, and the remains of several can still be seen. However, the Lost Horse Mine is the best one to seek out to get an idea of what it must have been like to transport equipment and gold ore in and out of the region back in the 1800’s. The Lost Horse Mine (and all the other mines) is off limits to the public but you can hike there to see the outside of the mine. The 4-mile loop trail is clearly marked on the Park map – be sure to take plenty of water on a hot day.
