Looking for college-town charm, giant parks, and craft beer? I always say—head to Chico! Tucked into Northern California’s Sacramento Valley, I’ve found Chico to be the perfect blend of nature, culture, and fun. Whether you’re wandering through Bidwell Park, checking out a local gallery, or sipping a cold one at Sierra Nevada, you’ll find that Chico has a laid-back energy and small-town heart that I think you’ll really enjoy.
Best Time to Visit
After visiting Chico in different seasons, I’ve found that spring and fall (March–May and September–November) are your best bet. You’ll get comfortable weather for hiking, festivals, and outdoor dining. Summer heat can be intense—though it’s great if you’re spending time by the water. Winters are mild, and I’ve had some cozy, quiet visits with just the occasional rain.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in from Sacramento—it’s about 1.5 hours north along Highway 99, or about 3 hours from the Bay Area if you’re coming from that direction.
- By Train: I’ve taken Amtrak’s Coast Starlight line, which stops right in Chico. It’s a scenic ride whether you’re coming from Seattle or LA.
- By Air: I typically fly into Sacramento International Airport (SMF), which is about a 90-minute drive away. Chico does have a small regional airport, but service can be limited—so I usually plan to drive or take the train from SMF.
Where to Stay
- Hotel Diamond – I’ve stayed here when I wanted something a little special—it’s a historic boutique hotel right downtown, with elegant rooms and easy access to shops and restaurants.
- Oxford Suites Chico – This one’s a favorite when I want more space and comfort. The free breakfast and proximity to Bidwell Park make it a great base for exploring.
- Best Western Heritage Inn – If you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay, this spot near the university is convenient, clean, and comes with a pool and breakfast. I’ve recommended it to friends who just needed something simple and easy.
