The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a freshwater refuge encompassing approximately 8,000 acres bordering the Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The wildlife refuge consists of barrier islands featuring large impoundments used by wintering wildfowl, ocean beach, ponds, freshwater marshes, maritime forests, and large sand dunes.
