Originally built back in 1792 and now a National Historic Landmark, Cape Henry Lighthouse began to crack in 1870, leading it to be replaced just 357 feet away by the new Cape Henry Lighthouse. This new lighthouse serves as a navigation aid and is operated by the United States Coast Guard. Preservation Virginia operates the old lighthouse. Which has become the City of Virginia Beach's official symbol. Since the lighthouses are located on the Fort Story military base, visitors will have to go through the security gates. Visitors must also be at least 42 inches tall to climb the Cape Henry Lighthouse.
