Tennessee Aquarium is a public aquarium located on the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. After a major expansion in 2005, the aquarium now holds over 12,000 animals from around 800 species. The aquarium consists of two facilities, the first being the River Journey, a 130,000-square-foot structure the height of a twelve-story building and containing 400,000 gallons of water, making it one of the world's largest freshwater aquariums.
It evolves around the theme of the Story of the River, following the water from the Appalachian Mountains all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The other facility, the Ocean Journey, is a 60,000-square-foot structure the height of a ten-story building and containing 700,000 gallons of water. Its story continues on from the River Journey to the Gulf of Mexico and is home to some magnificent species such as hyacinth macaws. It has a touch tank with small rays and sharks and a butterfly garden with South American butterflies.
