Nara became the country's first permanent capital in 710 A.D., and although it only remained the capital for 74 years, it still boasts plenty of gorgeous temples and historic artwork left over from this time period.

Many of the most significant temples are found in Nara Park, including the Kofuku-ji temple and the Todai-ji temple, and the park is also where you'll find the Kasuga Taisha shrine, which boasts more than 3,000 lanterns. There are plenty of naturally beautiful areas for visitors to explore in and around the city as well, including the Kasugayama Primeval Forest, the Isuien garden, and Mount Wakakusayama. Nara
