Named for its resemblance to the shape of a traditional Japanese instrument called a biwa, Lake Biwa is the largest freshwater lake in the country. It boasts more approximately 145 miles of shoreline for visitors to enjoy, and there are plenty of things to do both on and off the water. If you want to get in the water, the white sand Omimaiko Beach is a popular place for swimming and windsurfing. Small cruise ships take visitors around the south end of the lake several times a day, and you can also take a boat out to Chikubu Island to see the many shrines. Lake Biwa
