Built in 1904, Fort William H. Seward was one of 12 golf-rush era forts to be built in Alaska in an effort to control the unruly behavior of the stampeding gold seekers. After the gold rush the fort continued to be used during WWI as a training center for Alaskan draftees. Later, during WWII the fort was again used for training, recruitment and as a rest stop. When you visit Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark today you will find the remains of one of the two original barracks buildings as well as a small row of former Officer’s residences. The latter were very well equipped back in the day, and have been carefully preserved. Unfortunately, the buildings are not open to the public.
