Located near the mouth Cochrane Bay, Surprise Cove State Marine Park is one of the most popular outdoor areas near Whittier. The forested uplands are wonderful for hiking and backcountry camping. There are seven camping sites on various terrains throughout the park; one of the most popular is located on the gravel beach and can house approximately twelve tents within comfortable distance from each other.
