1. Prickett’s Fort State Park

Over 188 acres, Prickett’s Fort State Park is the place to go for historical education and connecting with nature. The fort was built during European settlement to protect settlers from Native American attack. Today’s guests visit a reconstruction of what the fort was believed to look like, though there are contradicting ideas. Inside the fort are four blockhouses (in the corners), a storehouse, a meeting house, and 14 small cabins. In the park outside of the fort are trails, picnicking areas, and an outdoor amphitheater for performances. Today’s fort also features a welcome center, which includes a research library and a gift shop.

2. Palatine Park

A much-loved Marion County recreational area, Palatine Park is an attractive riverside park located along the eastern bank of the Monongahela River. The park was specifically built to offer local residents a place to relax, exercise and attend events. You can bring your canoe or kayak to one of two boat launches (and an accessible kayak ramp). If you prefer to keep your feet dry you can enjoy walking along the paved walking paths. The children will love the kids-only splash pad and there are large grassy areas where you can relax with a book or just watch the passing parade. Free music concerts during the summer season are definitely one of the highlights of the park.

3. Marion County Historical Society

Whether wanting to research more about Fairmont and Marion County or just wanting to discover some history while on vacation, Marion County Historical Society and Museum has several collections for you to peruse.

The 1912 building that houses the museum was once the location of the county sheriffs. Today, each room features a historical period in America and Marion Country. Be sure to check out the collections about the glass industry, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, black history, and coal barons of the area. Of course, one room is dedicated to Marion County history specifically.

4. Marion County Park and Recreation Commission

The Marion County Park and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) is dedicated to providing fantastic outdoor activities throughout Marion County. MCPARC maintains 3000 acres of water and land and puts together programs for residents (and visitors) of all ages. One of the great locations run by MCPARC is the wave pool, which has a very minor admission fee for a day pass. The wave pool uses machinery to create artificial waves that have swimmers tubing and floating the waves all afternoon. It’s a great way to spend a hot summer West Virginia day. Along with summer day camps, MCPARC also has programs for geocaching, pickleball, and even a Christmas tree program in the winter.

5. Marion County Vietnam Memorial

Marion County Vietnam Memorial is a testament of respect and awe for those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War, particularly those from Marion County. Visitors to the memorial will be greeted by a volunteer-built memorial led by Alfred Knoll. In 1994, construction began, but it wasn’t until 1998 that it was completed. Guests will see the monument that stands stoically as a reminder of the Marion County 27 men who lost their lives in Vietnam. A US Army Helicopter, called the Huey, is also displayed at the memorial. This helicopter logged almost 5,000 hours in flight in Vietnam.

6. The Fleming Mansion

For those interested in visiting The Fleming Mansion (often referred to as Thomas Fleming House), you’ll need to look for the Woman’s Club of Fairmont, which is located in the old historic building. The house was built for the Fleming family, and in 1906, Annie Sweeny Fleming chose to start a woman’s club for like-minded women. Since the mansion is the home of the Woman’s Club, it is closed for visitors. However, during special occasions, such as Christmas or tea events, all three levels are open for viewing. Today, the members are the ones who undertake special restoration projects and fundraisers to keep the mansion in top shape.

7. Historic Woodlawn Cemetery

Historic Woodlawn Cemetery has a unique and interesting history in Fairmont. The first man to ever be buried there was Joseph Hamilton in 1875 when his gun went off and killed him. When the young man was buried right on the spot, the cemetery took root. Today, there are over 11,000 graves for guests to visit. There are many prominent names from the area buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, but if there is someone that needs to be found, in particular, volunteers can find out where every individual is buried. This, of course, comes with a small donation to the perpetual care foundation that keeps the cemetery looking pristine.

8. Muriale’s Italian Kitchen

Muriale’s Italian Kitchen has roots in Italy and has been in business in Fairmont since 1969. Once owned by Rocco Muriale’s parents, Rocco keeps the family traditions alive through Muriale’s food, service, and love. You’ll often be greeted by Rocco himself when you first enter Muriale’s. Once seated, you’ll be treated to Southern Italian-style food for lunch or dinner. Catering for weddings and other events is also available. Classic Italian specialties, like fried calamari and bruschetta, are some of the first items to dive into. Then, jump right in for a mouthwatering entrée like shrimp fra diavlo, veal parmesan, or gnocchi.
