Radford is a medium-size university city in Virginia that in mid-19th century grew from a small village near the New River. The town experienced a boom when a railway depot was constructed in what was then called Lovely Mount. The name was changed to Radford in 1891. Many beautiful homes that were built during that time are still standing in what is today’s historic Radford downtown. Radford is home to the famous Pete Dye River Course golf course, also a popular wedding destination. Former home of the General Gabriel C. Wharton is today a Glencoe house museum. Radford has several beautiful parks, including Wildwood Park with a range of hiking and biking trails and plenty of wildlife.
