Mechanicsville is an unincorporated area in Hanover County, Virginia. The area was originally settled by English colonists in the 17th century. Shelton House, built in the early eighteenth century, is one of the oldest structures in town. It is now one of the sites of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. Mechanicsville was the site of many battles during the American Civil War, starting with the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek. Cold Harbor National Cemetery was established on the site of the American Civil War Battle of Cold Harbor.
