If you need a charming small-town escape filled with history and a bit of a thrill, I’d definitely tell you to head to Martinsville. I found myself totally caught up in the NASCAR buzz, and you might too if you’re even a little into racing. You can wander through parks and scenic trails—I did, and I loved how peaceful they felt. And if you're like me and enjoy places where locals are genuinely warm and welcoming, you'll feel right at home here.
Martinsville, VA Highlights:
- Martinsville Speedway: I still remember the roar of the engines at “The Paperclip.” You should experience at least one race here—it’s short, loud, and unforgettable.
- Virginia Museum of Natural History: When I needed a slower pace, this museum was perfect. You’ll find dinosaurs, rocks, and even local wildlife—it’s surprisingly fascinating.
- Uptown Martinsville: I strolled along these streets, grabbing a coffee and snapping photos of murals. You’ll love the local flavor and creativity in every corner.
- Smith River Sports Complex: If you're up for a bit of kayaking or a relaxing riverside picnic, I’d say bring a blanket and go for it. I spent a whole afternoon there and didn’t want to leave.
- Philpott Lake: I hiked around the edges and watched the sunlight hit the water—it was stunning. You can fish, swim, or just soak in the views like I did.
Best Time to Visit Martinsville, VA
I’ve been during both spring and fall, and I can’t recommend those seasons enough. You’ll catch the prettiest weather, colorful foliage, and some major racing events too. If you’re planning a visit, I’d aim for April–May or September–October.
How to Get to Martinsville, VA
- If you're driving: I took U.S. Route 220 and found the ride from Roanoke to be easy and scenic. You’ll only need about an hour from there—or 1.5 hours if you’re coming from Greensboro.
- Flying in? I flew into Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) once, rented a car, and loved the drive. You could also use Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) for a similar route.
