Need a scenic mountain getaway or outdoor adventure in Virginia? I’d say head to Luray! The first time I visited, I couldn’t believe how much beauty was packed into this little town. Whether you’re looking to hike, explore underground wonders, or simply unwind somewhere peaceful, you’ll feel right at home in the Shenandoah Valley.

Luray, VA Highlights:

  • Luray Caverns: I’ve toured a lot of caverns, but these are truly breathtaking. If you’ve never seen musical stalactites or an underground lake, you’re in for a treat—you’ll walk away wowed.
  • Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive: I always make time to drive Skyline Drive. You’ll want to stop at every overlook—and if you’re up for a hike, the trails are some of my all-time favorites. Keep your camera ready!
  • Downtown Luray: I love strolling along Main Street. You’ll find great little cafés, quirky shops, and a lovely greenway by the creek. If you're anything like me, you’ll want to take your time here.
  • Car and Carriage Caravan Museum: I wasn’t expecting to love this place as much as I did. If you’re even a little into old cars or history, you’ll have a blast—it’s right next to the caverns, too.
  • Lake Arrowhead Recreation Park: On sunny days, I head here to fish or take a walk around the lake. You’ll appreciate the quiet, and it’s perfect for a picnic or just relaxing outdoors.

Best Time to Visit

I always try to visit in spring (April–June) or fall (September–November). In spring, the wildflowers are gorgeous and the waterfalls are flowing. Fall is my personal favorite—the colors along Skyline Drive are absolutely unforgettable. If you like crisp air and golden leaves, don’t miss it.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually take U.S. Route 211—it's a beautiful drive. You’ll find Luray about 90 minutes from D.C. and just an hour from Harrisonburg.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into Dulles (IAD) before—it’s about an hour and a half away. Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) is even closer, and super convenient if you can catch a flight there.
  • By Train: Amtrak doesn’t go right into town, but I’ve taken it to Culpeper and rented a car from there. If you enjoy scenic drives, it’s actually part of the fun.

Where to Stay

  • Mimslyn Inn – I stayed here once and felt completely spoiled. If you enjoy history, mountain views, and a little elegance, you’ll love it.
  • Hotel Laurance – I love this place for its charm and location. You’re just steps from downtown, and every suite feels uniquely cozy and stylish.
  • Skyland Resort – If you want to stay right inside the national park, this is where I’d send you. It’s rustic but comfortable, and waking up surrounded by nature is something you’ve got to experience at least once.
