This section of the Appalachian Trail once connected Roanoke with Rockfish Gap until the Blue Ridge Parkway was built. The trail was then pushed into some of the nearby peaks, making the segment of trail from Roanoke to Rockfish Gap a bit more tricky, but just as beautiful. Hikers who love to climb will find ample opportunity here, with rock formations and sheer cliff walls for climbers of many abilities. The trail is dog friendly, but can be quite difficult, so both hikers and four-legged companions should be in good shape and ready for a long and strenuous journey.
