When I’m in the mood for mountain views, amazing food, and a scoop of something legendary, I head to Waterbury—and I think you’ll fall for it too. Nestled between Montpelier and Stowe, this Vermont gem blends outdoor adventure with small-town warmth. I’ve hiked the Green Mountains, sampled craft brews, and made more than one stop for Ben & Jerry’s. Whether you're coming for foliage, skiing, or cider donuts, Waterbury always delivers the kind of charm that keeps me coming back.

Best Time to Visit

I love visiting in the fall (September–October) when the leaves light up the mountains in reds and golds. You’ll get crisp air, perfect hiking weather, and some of the most stunning views I’ve seen anywhere. Summer’s also great—think kayaking, trails, and festivals. And when I want snow and cozy vibes, I come in winter to hit the slopes nearby in Stowe or Bolton Valley.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I take I-89—Waterbury’s right off the highway, just 30 minutes from Montpelier and 45 from Burlington. You’ll enjoy scenic views the whole way.
  • By Train: I’ve taken the Amtrak Vermonter line to Waterbury-Stowe Station. It’s a stress-free way to get here if you’re coming from the south, and you’ll step off right near downtown.
  • By Air: When I fly, I use Burlington International Airport (BTV)—it’s just a 40-minute drive, and it’s super easy to navigate. You’ll be relaxing in town not long after you land.

Where to Stay

  • Old Stagecoach Inn – I stayed here for the cozy, historic vibe and those hearty Vermont breakfasts. You’ll love the antique charm and walkable downtown location.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites Waterbury Stowe – When I want something modern and convenient, I go here. You’ll be close to everything with comfy rooms and great access to the highway.
  • Hen of the Wood Inn – This one’s perfect when I want something romantic and rustic. You’ll find elegant touches and one of my favorite restaurants right nearby.

Must-see if you are a first-time visitor:

  • Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour – I never skip this stop. You’ll take a quick tour, see how the magic’s made, and top it off with a scoop or two—it’s as fun as it is delicious.
  • Green Mountain Coffee Café & Visitor Center – I love grabbing a cup of coffee here and learning about Vermont’s coffee roots. You’ll enjoy it even more in the beautifully restored train station.
  • Little River State Park – When I want to hike or paddle, this is where I go. You can kayak, fish, or just soak in the nature—and if you’re into camping, the starry nights here are incredible.
  • Prohibition Pig – I always stop here for BBQ and local beer. You’ll love the laid-back vibe and bold flavors—it’s a true Waterbury favorite.
  • Cold Hollow Cider Mill – If you love cider, donuts, or maple anything, this place is a must. I always leave with a full belly and a bag of Vermont goodies—you will too.
