Review:

The Chateau d'If is an imposing ancient fortress situated on the Island of If, off the coast of Marseille. The fortress was built by King Francois I of France between 1524 and 1531 and has been standing guard over the Provencal coastline for nearly 500 years. As it happens, the fortress struck such fear into France’s enemies that it was never attacked or put to the test. The fortress was immortalized in the novel The Count of Monte Cristo and over the centuries, many myths and legends have surrounded the impenetrable stronghold. You can take a short boat trip to the island from the Old Port and explore at your own pace with the assistance of many information boards.
