Standing guard over the village of Castleton since the 11th century, Peveril Castle is an imposing ruin and a must-visit attraction for history buffs. Here you can see one of the oldest Norman fortresses in England, boasting a keep which was built by Henry II in 1176. It would be a good idea to start your tour of the property at the Visitor’s Center where you can learn a bit of background information. It is quite a steep walk up to the castle but you will be rewarded for your efforts by superb views out over the Hope Valley. You can combine your visit to the castle with a tour of the Peak Cavern, which lies at the base of the hill.
