Need a historic North Texas escape with just the right amount of charm? I always recommend Sherman, just an hour north from Dallas! Every time I’ve visited, I’ve found a warm welcome, lots of character, and so many ways to unwind. You’ll love how Sherman blends history, culture, and nature, whether you're poking through antique shops, listening to live music downtown, or kicking back by the lake. It’s my go-to weekend retreat just north of Dallas.

Sherman, TX Highlights (What I Think You’ll Love):

  • For family fun, Herman Baker Park has never let me down – I’ve walked the nature trails, watched the kids play, and even tried the disc golf. You’ll find plenty of space to stretch out and relax by the pond.
  • Into the outdoors? I think Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is a gem – I’ve hiked, picnicked, and spotted dozens of birds with stunning views of Lake Texoma. If you like peace and quiet with your nature, you’ll feel right at home here.
  • Traveling with kids? The Harber Wildlife Museum always surprises me – You’ll see an incredible collection of lifelike animal dioramas. I’ve spent hours here, and each time I find something new to admire.
  • Feeling adventurous? You should definitely hit Lake Texoma – I’ve gone kayaking and fishing here, and the water’s always calling. You can rent gear or launch a boat—either way, you’re in for a great day.
  • Want to shop local? I say start in Downtown Sherman – I’ve browsed antiques, chatted with gallery owners, and picked up one-of-a-kind finds. You’ll love the walkable streets and that vintage storefront vibe.

When I’d Plan Your Visit to Sherman

I usually aim for spring or fall—between March–May or September–November—when the weather feels just right and the festivals are in full swing. If you’re like me and love lake days, summer’s great too, just a bit warmer. Winters are mild, so if you’re looking for a quieter escape, you’ll still find plenty to enjoy.

How I Get to Sherman (And How You Can Too)

  • By car: I take US-75—it’s a straight shot about 1.5 hours north of Dallas. You’ll be surprised how easy the drive is from McKinney or Denison too.
  • By air: When I fly in, I land at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). It’s about 1.5 hours away by car—perfect if you’re flying into North Texas.
  • By bus: I’ve noticed there are a few bus options like Greyhound, but to be honest, I always recommend having a car to get around. You’ll want that freedom once you're in town.

Where I Like to Stay in Sherman

  • Hilton Garden Inn Denison/Sherman – I’ve stayed here when I wanted something modern and convenient. You’ll enjoy the pool, on-site dining, and easy access to the highway.
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sherman – When I need something reliable and comfy, this place checks the boxes. You’ll appreciate the included breakfast and quiet rooms.
  • Old Iron Post Airbnb Lofts – I once booked a stay here and loved the stylish vibe. If you want to be close to shops and restaurants downtown, this spot puts you right in the middle of it all.
