I’ve spent time exploring this town just east of Dallas, and you’ll quickly see why it’s called the “Rodeo Capital of Texas.” Whether you're watching a bull ride or walking through its historic downtown, Mesquite gives you that authentic Texas feel—without giving up modern convenience.
Mesquite, TX Highlights:
- Cheer at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo — I went once during rodeo season and the energy was electric. If you’ve never seen live rodeo action, you’re in for a thrill. It’s loud, fast, and full of Texas heart.
- Explore Downtown Mesquite — I loved strolling through this revitalized area. You’ll find small shops, vintage architecture, and great BBQ spots—plus a cozy, walkable vibe you’ll appreciate.
- Hike or bike at Samuell Farm — On one of my visits, I packed a lunch and spent the afternoon here. It’s peaceful, with easy trails, ponds for fishing, and open fields that make you feel miles from the city.
- Catch a show at Mesquite Arts Center — I’ve caught a concert and a gallery show here—it’s such a cool spot to unwind and enjoy the local arts. You might even catch a cultural festival if you time it right.
- Shop and dine at Town East Mall — When I needed a break from the outdoors, this was my go-to. You’ll find tons of shops and restaurants here, from big brands to casual eats—perfect for recharging.
Best Time to Visit Mesquite, TX
Personally, I’d recommend going in the spring or fall (March–May and September–November). The weather is just right for rodeo nights, festivals, or long walks in the parks. I’ve visited in summer too—just be ready for some heat. It’s a great time for splash pads, evening concerts, or cooling off with some iced tea and brisket.
How to Get to Mesquite, TX
- By Car — I usually drive in via I-635 or I-30. It’s only about 20 minutes east of downtown Dallas, so you can easily make it a quick day trip or a weekend escape.
- By Air — I’ve flown into both Dallas Love Field and DFW. Love Field is a bit closer (around 20 minutes), but even from DFW, it’s only a 35–40 minute ride. You’ll be in Mesquite before you know it.
- By Public Transit — I wouldn’t rely on DART rail since it doesn’t go all the way into Mesquite. That said, you can catch connecting buses from Dallas if you're not driving. Just plan ahead a bit for timing.
Where to Stay in Mesquite, TX
- Hampton Inn & Suites Mesquite — I stayed here once when I was going to the rodeo. It’s literally next door, the breakfast is solid, and the outdoor pool was perfect after a hot day.
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mesquite — If you’re traveling with family or on business, I think you’ll like this option. I found the location super convenient and the rooms nice and quiet.
- Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott — I’ve recommended this to friends who wanted something modern and close to shopping. The service was great and it’s near a bunch of dining options too.
