Looking for a laid-back, fun destination near Dallas? I say head to Garland, Texas! I’ve found it to be the perfect mix of small-town charm and big-city convenience. If you’re like me and love spending time in parks, strolling through historic downtowns, or tasting flavors from around the world, you’re going to love what Garland has to offer. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, eat well, and still be just a quick ride from downtown Dallas.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, the best times to explore Garland are in the spring through early summer (March to June) or again in the fall (September to November). You’ll appreciate the milder weather—it’s ideal for walking trails, checking out festivals, or simply hanging out in the city’s green spaces. I usually avoid the midsummer heat, unless I’m staying somewhere with a pool!
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I’ve driven into Garland many times—it’s super convenient via I-635 or U.S. Highway 75. You’ll find it just northeast of Dallas, so you can get there in no time if you’re already in the area.
- By Air: I like flying into Dallas Love Field when possible—it’s only about a 30-minute drive to Garland. If you need more flight options, Dallas/Fort Worth International is about 40 minutes out and offers plenty of connections.
- By Train: If you want to skip traffic, hop on the DART Light Rail. I’ve taken the Blue Line from downtown Dallas to Garland, and it’s both easy and affordable. You’ll be surprised how connected the area is.
Where to Stay
- Tru by Hilton Garland Richardson – I stayed here once on a weekend trip, and the vibe is fresh and modern. If you’re into convenient access to shops and restaurants, this place is a great fit.
- Holiday Inn Garland – This is a solid pick for families or work travel. I appreciated the full-service feel—with a pool, a decent in-house restaurant, and comfy rooms, it made for a relaxing stay.
- Hyatt Place Dallas/Garland/Richardson – I’ve recommended this one to friends who love free breakfast and being close to the Firewheel Town Center. It’s super convenient if you plan to explore local attractions without straying too far.
