Treue der Union translates as “Loyalty to the Union” – you will find this German-American monument in Kendall County, where it was erected in 1866 to honor the German-Texans who lost their lives in the 1862 Nueces Massacre. The massacre took place when a group of 72 men (conscientious objectors) refused to sign an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy. The 20-ft high obelisk was carved out of native Texas limestone, and was financed by the local community. It marks the spot were several of the massacred men were laid to rest in a mass grave (several more drowned in the Nueces River and their bodies were never retrieved).
